When is off-peak electricity in Malaysia, and does it matter for charging an EV at home?

Updated 2026-11-04 · By the Dongfeng Johor Bahru team

On TNB's Time-of-Use (ToU) scheme, the weekday peak is 2 PM to 10 PM and off-peak is 10 PM to 2 PM; Saturday and Sunday are off-peak all day. TNB says off-peak rates are lower than peak rates. Whether your account is on a ToU tariff, and the current rates, are for TNB to confirm in myTNB. This is our reading as of 4 November 2026, not advice.

What are TNB's peak and off-peak hours?

On its Tariff page, TNB describes a Time-of-Use scheme with two time zones. From Monday to Friday, Peak is 2 PM to 10 PM and Off-Peak is 10 PM to 2 PM. On Saturday and Sunday, it is Off-Peak throughout the day (24 hours). The page also lists a Domestic General Tariff and a Domestic ToU Tariff, and says rates in the Off-Peak period will be lower than in the Peak period.

Why might it matter if you charge an EV at home?

Most owners charge overnight, so the car is ready in the morning. Our Vigo guide says about 9 hours on a 6.6 kW wall box, so as a simple example a weekday charge that starts at 10 PM would finish before the 2 PM peak begins. Real charging time depends on the model, how empty the battery is, the charger and the weather, so treat that as an example, not a promise.

What does the TNB page not tell you?

In the version we read, the rate tables did not load, so we do not quote any sen per kWh figure. The page also gave no eligibility rules or steps for switching to the ToU tariff, did not mention public holidays, and showed no effective date. It says the Fuel Adjustment is updated monthly. We do not know whether a ToU tariff would lower your bill, because that depends on when you use electricity, so we make no savings claim.

How do you check your own account?

Only TNB can tell you which tariff your account is on and what the current rates are. Open the myTNB app or portal, read the Tariff page, or ask TNB. Before you decide anything, check these:

  • Which tariff your account is on now (Domestic General or Domestic ToU)
  • The current peak and off-peak rates on TNB's own page
  • Whether you can switch and how (ask TNB, the page gave no steps)
  • When you usually plug in, on weekdays and at weekends
  • Whether your charger or car can start a charge at a set time (check its manual)

Where does the dealership fit in?

We are a car centre, not an electricity provider, so we cannot tell you your tariff, your rates or your bill. We can tell you about the Dongfeng Vigo and 007 charging figures on our model pages, and our guide to charging an EV at home in Johor covers the practical side of a wall box.
