What do you need to drive a Malaysia-registered EV from Johor Bahru into Singapore?

Updated 2026-10-31 · By the Dongfeng Johor Bahru team

According to LTA's OneMotoring page, a Malaysia-registered car must have LTA's VEP approval, an activated Autopass card, valid insurance and road tax before it enters Singapore, and LTA asks you to register at least 2 weeks before you travel. The page lists no separate step for electric cars. This is our reading as of 31 October 2026, so check the LTA page for your own case before you go.

Does an electric car need a VEP?

LTA's page for Malaysia-registered cars and motorcycles sets out one set of steps for cars, and we found no separate step for electric cars. So a Malaysia-registered EV such as the Dongfeng Vigo or 007 appears to be handled like any other Malaysia-registered car. Rules change, so read the LTA page again before each trip.

What does LTA ask you to have?

LTA lists these for a Malaysia-registered car entering Singapore, and says you must show them when officers ask:

  • The VEP approval email from LTA
  • An Autopass card for that car, activated online before you enter
  • An insurance certificate valid for use on Singapore roads
  • Road tax
  • The vehicle registration certificate

How early should you apply?

LTA says to register for an Autopass account on its VEP portal at least 2 weeks ahead of your travel. Once the VEP application is approved, you can pay for the Autopass card online and collect it. The card must be activated online before you bring the car into Singapore. LTA also says that from 2 November 2026, applications by foreign-registered vehicles with outstanding fines will not be accepted.

What about tolls and charges?

LTA lists entry and exit tolls, a road charge and VEP fees on the same page, and says the VEP fee rules change from 1 January 2027. We do not copy amounts here because they change. Read the current figures on the LTA page before you go.

What should you think about for the EV itself?

Plan the trip around the car's range and where you will charge. The Dongfeng Vigo lists 471 km on the CLTC cycle and the 007 Premium up to 650 km on CLTC, as on our model pages. Real-world range depends on the variant, speed, weather, air-con and charger, so do not treat those figures as a promise. Check where you will charge in Singapore yourself, because this guide does not cover that.
